How to Create a Partition or Volume in Windows using Command Prompt

Diskpart is a disk management tool or utility that is designed to create, delete, and resize hard drive partitions. In general, we can say that Diskpart command has the ability to divide a hard disk into different partitions as well as has the ability to merge them again in a single partition. By using Diskpart command we can easily assign or reassign drive letters in Windows operating systems. Partition creation is a very useful process because by which we can easily classify our stored data on a disk in different parts or volumes.

However, you can split your hard drive into several different partitions and store your data files separately from your system files. We can create partitions on windows as hard drive partitions allow the computer to treat one hard drive as multiple distinct volumes. This enables you to install multiple operating systems or create a second drive for storing a specific file. So let’s start here how to create a partition in windows using the command prompt.

How to create a Partition or Volume in Windows using Command Prompt

Now follow below-given steps to create a new partition on your hard disk

Step 1: First of all, open Command Prompt as admin. To do so press Windows key + X and then choose Command Prompt (Admin) option to open the Command Prompt as admin. Because to create new partition we needed administrative permission to run the commands in Command Prompt.


Step 2: After that, type diskpart in Command Prompt and then press Enter to proceed. After running this command we will be able to access the control of all disks connected to our system.

Step 3: After that, type list disk command in it and then press Enter to proceed. Now you saw a list of all disks which is connected to your computer will be shown on screen with their disk number.

Step 4: Now simply type select disk 0 (Here 0 is the number of disks in which you want to create a partition.) in command prompt and press Enter to proceed.

Step 5: After that, type create partition primary size=70000 (Here give the size in MB, not in GB) in command prompt and then press Enter to proceed.

Step 6: Now assign a letter or path to your new partition that is useful in identifying the partition by its name. So always assign a letter or path to your partition. To assign a letter to your partition type assign letter=R and then press Enter. (Here you can change letter name from R to anything which you want.)

Step 7: After that, we will format that newly created partition because without a format that partition we can not use that partition for storing data on your hard disk. So always remember that always format your newly created partition before using it. Now to format a partition type format fs=ntfs quick in command prompt and then press Enter to proceed.

Now your new partition on the disk is created successfully.

Step 8: Now to check all partitions on your hard disk by using the command prompt. Simply type list volume command after select disk 0 commands in command prompt and press Enter. Now all of your partitions will be shown on the screen of your system.
