How to Make Bootable USB Drive using Command Prompt in Windows System

This article is all about how to create a USB drive bootable through using command prompt in Windows. There are many of the software’s are available on the internet to create a bootable USB drive for any of the operating systems. In today’s world, everyone uses these software’s to create a bootable USB drive for all version of the Windows, Linux and any other operating systems for your machine. Because bootable USB drives help us to install a new operating system on our PC. But sometimes we stuck in a situation that the software does not work properly on your PC but you want to create a bootable device on your system for any of operating system then this method is very helpful for us to create a bootable USB drive.

Now follow these given steps to create a bootable USB drive through using the command prompt. Video link is also available at the end of the article.

Step 1: First of all, download an ISO file from the internet on your system, which operating system you want to install on your device.

Step 2: After that, put the USB drive in your computer and then open the Command Prompt as Administrator because without Administrator access your system does not able to create a bootable USB drive.

Step 3: Now to open Command Prompt as Admin, press Windows key+X. After that, you will see a list of options displayed on your left bottom corner of the screen now choose command prompt (Admin) option to open your command prompt with the power of Administrator.

Step 4: After that, type diskpart command in Command Prompt and then press Enter to proceed. This command helps you in access all the control of disks which is connected to your system on your command prompt. Now you can control all your disks from the command prompt. As the figure shown below.

Step 5: Now type list disk command in Command Prompt and then press Enter to proceed. This command helps you to show all the connected disks from your system along with their sizes and also saw the numbers of your disks. As the figure is shown below

Step 6: Now type select disk 1 command in Command Prompt and then press Enter to proceed. Here this command helps you to select the disk from your computer in which you want to put bootable ISO image from your system (Always remember select disk number wisely according to your requirement. like here I choose disk 1 because here disk 0 is my primary disk on which all of my data is stored). As the figure is shown below

Step 7: After that, type clean command in Command Prompt and then press Enter to proceed. This command helps you to clean your entire disk and all your data will be erased from that disk.

Step 8: Now type create partition primary command in Command Prompt and then press Enter to proceed.

Step 9: – After that, type select partition 1 command in the Command Prompt and then press Enter to proceed. (Here do not change the number of partition run this command on your system, as usual.)

Step 10: After that, type active command in Command Prompt and then press Enter to proceed. Here this command helps you to activate a selected partition which is inactive by default and which is created by us in previous steps.

Step 11: Now type format fs=ntfs quick command in Command Prompt and then press Enter to proceed. This command helps you to format that selected disk in NTFS file system type and permanently erase your all the data which is stored on that disk and USB drive. So always copy all the data on your system from that USB drive and then use these steps to create a USB drive bootable.

Step 12: Now wait for few seconds to successfully format that pen drive after the process is completed simply type assign command in Command Prompt and then press Enter to proceed. Now your pen drive will be assigned by using this command.

Step 13: After that, type exit command in command prompt and press Enter to proceed. This command helps you in leaving diskpart window and leave all the access to disks which is connected to your system. As the figure is shown below

Step 14: After that, your USB drive/pen drive will be changed into a bootable device. Now at the last, close the command prompt on your Windows PC then extract your iso file on your system and then copy that extracted file from your system and then paste it to that USB drive/pen drive.

After that wait for some time now when copying of files will be completed then you will see that your USB drive/pen drive will be converted into a bootable device and now you can install that operating system on any machine such as PC and laptops by using this USB drive easily.
