How to Convert MBR to GPT in Windows Operating System using Command Prompt
MBR and GPT are two ways in which we arrange our hard disk in partitions or we can say they are a kind of partition system. But they are different from each other and we can easily convert them according to our needs like MBR to GPT. Actually, GPT partition is somewhere much better than MBR. Windows Operating System has the builtin feature by which you can easily convert a hard drive partition into either MBR or GPT which are very well known by all the Windows users.
This article is all about how to convert your MBR partition into GPT by using a command prompt in Windows. After reading this article you will be able to convert your hard disk partition from MBR to GPT. When you are initializing a new hard drive in Windows built-in-disk Manager, a window pops up and asks you to choose between MBR (Master Boot Record) and GPT (GUID Partition Table) disk.
There are two different ways of storing the partitioning information on a drive that is MBR and GPT. The default setting of windows would initialize the disk to MBR partition style. The MBR is an old and commonly used disk layout but it has some limitations. So, we convert our MBR partition into GPT by using the command prompt.
First of all, we learn some basic knowledge about MBR and GPT partition.
1. MBR Disk Layout
MBR: – MBR stands for Master Boot Record which is a default way in which our windows partitions are arranged. With this type of partition system you can only have 4 primary partitions and to create more partitions we have to make an extended partition out of any primary partition. MBR could hold up to 2 TB space of the hard disk.
MBR (Master Boot Record) is an old commonly-used disk layout that is used as default in windows. Firstly MBR is introduced with IBM PC DOS 2.0 in approx 1983. MBR works with disks up to 2 TB in size, But it can not handle disks with more than 2 TB of space. With MBR disk layout you can only create four primary partitions. If you want to create more than four partitions then, first of all, you convert a primary partition into Extended partition then create logical partitions inside it. This is the drawback of MBR so we introduce a new disk layout named GPT.
2. GPT Disk Layout
GPT: – GPT stands for GUID Partition Table. With the GPT type partition system, you can create more partitions( up to 128 ) and there’s no limit of hard disk space with such type of partition system.
GPT (GUID Partition Table) is a new standard that gradually replaces MBR. It is associated with UEFI. It does not have limitations like MBR. GPT allows you to create unlimited partitions on your system without creating an extended partition. In Windows, you can allow up to 128 partitions on a GPT drive. On an MBR disk Partitioning and boot, data is stored in one place and in a GPT disk multiple copies of this data stored across the disk. It is much more durable and also can recover if the data is corrupted. So, we use GPT in computers instead of MBR.
Now we learn that how to convert an MBR partition into GPT by using the command prompt.
Note: This process erases all of your data from hard disk so always create a backup of your data before proceeding this process.
Step 1: First of all open command prompt using Windows key + X and then choose command prompt (Admin) option to open the command prompt as admin.
Step 2: After that, your command prompt will be open now type diskpart command in it and press Enter to proceed. This command is used to access the control of all the disks connected to your Windows PC.
Step 3: After that type list disk command in command prompt and then press Enter to proceed. This command shows the list of all disks connected to your Windows PC.
Step 4: After that type select disk 0 command in command prompt and then press Enter to proceed. This command helps you in selecting the disk which you want to convert into GPT.
Step 5: After that type clean command in command prompt and then press Enter to proceed. This command format your disk and your all data will be cleaned from that disk because without erase all data from your disk you cannot be able to convert your disk into GPT.
Step 6: Now type Convert GPT command in your command prompt and then press Enter. This command helps you to convert your disk from MBR to GPT. But it erases all the data from your hard disk including your boot files and Windows files. Now put a bootable pen drive or a bootable CD in your Windows PC and then again install an operating system on your computer then your disk will be converted into GPT from MBR.
If you want to convert your disk partition at the time of window installation simply open command prompt at the time of partition creation and then press shift + f10 to open the command prompt on your screen and then follow the above-given steps.
